Neil McFarlane

b. 1742

Life

Neil McFarlane was born in 1742 on the Isle of Tiree, Argyll, he married Marion McLean (also from Tiree) and together they had a daughter Christina McFarlane (b. 1802, Kilkenneth, Tiree). The McFarlane (MacFarlane) name comes from a powerful Highland clan — Clan MacFarlane of Loch Lomondside — though many McFarlane families spread throughout the islands and Argyll in the 18th century. Tiree is one of the flattest and most fertile islands in the Hebrides, historically known for its agricultural communities.

A Niell McFarlane, 30, 'poor and can't take land', is listed at Balemeanoch in 1776, and a Neil McFarlane, 30, with a son Donald, 5, at Gortandonuil in 1779. That is about four years younger than 1742 and is a possible, unconfirmed match.

Tiree's Old Parish Register begins in 1766 (only 23 baptisms recorded that year), so a baptism in 1742 will not be in it. Better sources: the 1776 and 1779 Tiree name lists, later rentals and the baptism or marriage records of his children after 1766.
